Iowa State Fair Food "On a Stick"

Uh huh, almost any food you can think of is found "on a stick" at the Iowa State Fair. My friends Kirsti and Bill look forward to a visit so they can try it all. There is chicken on a stick, corn on a stick, steak on a stick - you name it. I DID NOT see bugs on a stick as you find in China though - I have a feeling the fairgoers may not like that.....But you never know, there are lots of watering holes, Stockmans, etc ---oh and excellent margaritas - -and I don't even like Margaritas.....

Charlie Daniels on Stage at the 2008 Iowa State Fair

(LEFT) My daughter Merrill (Age 8) and me in the wings at the Charlie Daniels Concert at the Iowa State Fair. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when my cute "little" girl said she would much rather be on stage than out in the crowd and she would rather be out front singing than sitting on the side of the stage. It was an honor and a pleasure to see Charlie play live. He is an excellent person and Merrill also loves his wife Hazel. When you look up "Good People" the Charlie Daniels Family shows up. At soon to be 72, Charlie wowed the crowd. The folks in the grandstand stood for Charlie's beautiful rendition of "How Great Thou Art" and they roared when he played "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". I thought I was losing Merrill to the land of sleep but her eyes lit up when the fiddle came out. The crowd was on it's feet and LOUD when Shooter Jennings and 38 Special Joined the Charlie Daniels Band on stage. Of all the moments I have shared with my daughter, the entire day at the state fair was incredible. She has called Nashville home since she was 2 years old, and this year we moved to Iowa, where I grew up. This day blended great memories of her childhood and mine.

There are stories of Jim Beam, Jack, and even Jose, but you can't bottle the spirit and soul that you find in Charlie Daniels - no way

Mr. Lucas is a very pleasant and intelligent man ---and he can cook some fantastic grits! He told me what it was like to catch a pass from Brett Favre, AND he proudly discussed his latest "catch" - his beautiful wife Devae. Pearls are not just for brides and special occasions. EVERY gal, regardless of your age, where you live, what you do for a living....even if you only "dress up" once a year (I hear you!) You NEED a pair of pearl earrings. You can wear your pearls with your jeans, and you can (must?) wear them to a job interivew. I worked with a wonderful woman who was a peal buyer and she convinced me to keep a set of pearl earrings in my desk and in my car so I would never be less than confident. It WORKS! Millimeter size is important when valuing pearls. Size is limited by the mollusk used in cultivation. The type of pearl is also considered when a pearl is priced. The Akoya pearl from Japan is considered the most lustrous. China also produces a cultured Akoya pearl.

Once, all pearls were only natural, most recovered from the Persian Gulf, occurring once in every 15,000 oysters.

I wore this Bella Luce bracelet on January 11, 2008 when Public Relations Representative Kelly Fletcher and I, as JTV's Jewelry Trend Tracker (TM), joined over 600 industry leaders and professionals who attended the (JIC) Jewelry Information Center's sixth Annual Gem Gala Awards. The event was held at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. The atmosphere was incredible! The decor, service and meal was everything Cipriani is known for. This year's honorees included Bulgari for Corporate Communications, Excellence in Marketing; Terry Burman, Sterling Jewelers Inc. for Lifetime Achievement; and Roberta Naas for Excellence in Jewelry and Watch Writing.

Hall of Fame football star Dan Marino introduced and presented Bulgari's award as he has had a long-standing relationship with the luxury brand. I got to text message my friends at home so they could brag to their husbands that I knew Dan was on crutches and had recently undergone knee surgery. My first job in the jewelry industry, in 1993, was as a sales associate in a Sterling Jeweler's store, so I was glad to hear Terry Burman's story when he received his award. Kelly and I had the pleasure of talking with the well known and beautiful Mistress of Ceremonies - Deborah Norville. Deborah shared a story about the jewels she wore for another event. Norville explained that most jewelry celebrities wear is on loan and needs to be returned after the event.
One particular evening, Deborah was donned with an extravagantly beautiful diamond ensemble. She laughed and told us the security guard that came with the jewelry was quite attractive as well. She said he actually had to wait outside the powder room when she would freshen up and then check her neck, wrist, fingers and ears to make sure the expensive diamond pieces were all intact! While we chatted, I somehow mentioned that I have been struggling with whether to cut my hair. For the record, Deborah voted "no". It was fun to "gab" with a celebrity. Deborah Norville is obviously accomplished, intelligent and beautiful, however, she took time to speak with us and was as welcoming as a neighbor. BIG kudos to Deborah!! Fox News Rising - Charlotte, North Carolina

I appeared on "FOX NEWS RISING" in Charlotte, NC

Fox News Rising is a face-paced morning show and it starts EEEEAAARRLY. I arrived at 5:30 AM and Zack, the producer greeted me. He is now one of my favorite people as he brought me a much needed cup of coffee. When the show was over, Zack made sure I was transported safely to the airport to travel to my next appearance. Where in the world is “SheDiddy”?

CLUE: This city is home to the Henry B. Plant Museum, bright sunsets, glistening waterways, the annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival and my buddy, former Real World Seattle star Lindsay MacDonald.

ANSWER: Tampa, Florida

I arrived in the Sunshine State on Thursday and landed in the Tampa International Airport just in time to make rush hour traffic in the rain. Tampa Bay is located on the central west coast of Florida. My cab driver took me to my hotel, and rain or shine, it is one of my favorite places to stay in the country. The Embassy Suites Hotel is on Florida Avenue across from the convention center on the bay. Not only is the weather warm, the people of Tampa are warm and friendly as well. The photo above is the view from my hotel room.

Sports fans know Tampa as home to many teams including the Buccaneers, the Devil Rays, and the Lighting. The city is also well equipped for conventions. Even the Convention Center is on the water. To the right of this text, you can see the convention center, the city skyline, and in the distance, the NBC station where Daytime is taped.

In the case you’re vacationing, Tigers Eye is a great stone to wear in the evening as well as in the sun with your swimwear. I’m not sure it will actually make your hips look smaller, but I know it makes me feel better if I am wearing earrings and a necklace. I hope to draw the focus to the few parts of the body that don’t need to go to the gym – the neck and ear lobes. And yes, I brought my tennis shoes to tampa, and no, I did not run on the treadmill - again - uuugh!

I decided to venture to the popular tourist area, Channelside, to have dinner. I enjoyed Tuna Asada at Tina Tapas. Talk about fabulous! Even in the rain, this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. If you’ve read any of my other posts, you know I love Trolleys, and Tampa has a great electric streetcar system. I was happy to join both Cyndi Edwards and Lindsay MacDonald in my fall jewelry trend and style segment which will air October 8. I met fellow television guests, authors, and multi-taskers, the Pursell sisters, in the green room. Lauren is the editor of Self Magazine http://www.self.com/.
Her sister Anne Purcell Grissinger works for JP Morgan and is the mommy of two small children. We instantly bonded. The sealing moment was when Lauren and Anne told me they are spokeswomen for Sara Lee products. Now THAT is a company close to my heart. My dad worked for the Kitchens of Sara Lee in their plant in New Hampton, Iowa for many years and I spent a summer working in their bakery thrift shop. I think I lived on bread and cheesecake for three months. Anne and I laughed at our mutual stories of being working moms on the road and Lauren amazed me with her ability to multi-task while holding a prestigious position at one of my favorite women’s magazines. I had never been to Little Rock, Arkansas and I am not sure what I expected, but I must say it is BEAUTIFUL. I landed in the airport at 6pm and it was a fabulous 70 degrees. I took a cab to my hotel and we drove through the River Market District where the restaurants had perfect outdoor eating areas. The city seems to be a great blend of old and new, and I love the electric street cars that transport folks from place to place.

I noticed the southern hospitality immediately as a gentleman stopped to hold a door open for me. I consider that chivalry - it was an AUTOMATIC door! He stood in it so I could pass easily. Checking in at the hotel held an extra treat as I was given a warm chocolate chip cookie with my room key. Yes, life is good. I then found that my hotel room overlooked the river. AWESOME Arkansas.

I am fighting a head cold (‘tis the season) so I decided to order room service and sleep to prepare for my morning appearance on “Positively Arkansas”. I had Orange Roughy with rice. Here is a photo of my “office” on the road:

The hotel staff was wonderful as I checked out to go to Today’s THV Channel 11. I realized, just as I was leaving the hotel, that I had forgotten my purse in the room. Yes, it was one of “those” mornings. It is a good thing my head is attached to my body or I may have left it behind as well! Hospitality workers had already taken the purse to security by the time I got to the twelfth floor to retrieve it. I walked in to the security office and shared a laugh with the very pleasant officer. With my Gucci in hand, and all contents in tact, I uttered, “Thank Goodness for Southern Hospitality” and off I went. Okay, so it is a Gucci "designer look".....but I still love it.
